David C. Kibbe, M.D., M.B.A., is Senior Advisor to the American Academy of Family Physicians, Chair of the ASTM International E31 Technical Committee on Healthcare Informatics, and Principal of The Kibbe Group LLC. A respected technologist, entrepreneur, and co-developer of ASTM International’s Continuity of Care Record standard—which uses XML for interoperable health information exchange—he is also an experienced clinician who practiced medicine in private and academic settings for more than 15 years while also teaching informatics at the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has started two medical software companies and, in 2005, was voted one of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare by readers of the magazine Modern Physician. Dr. Kibbe currently serves on a number of national boards and workgroups involved in health IT standards and certification. He is a frequent blogger and speaker on health IT adoption, privacy and security of health data exchange, and a range of other topics.
